Chowgule and St. Xavier’s Hockey Champs

Chowgule College, Margao and St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa won the Goa University inter Collegiate Hockey Championship 2011-12 for men and women respectively. In the closely contested encounter the scores were goalless at half time . In the second half Kamal Minz’s field goal in the 38^th minute of the match gave Chowgule the Men Championship.

In the women section it was Rosary who played well in the first half to hold Xavier’s goalless till half time. The Xavier girls came up with a better play in the second half and used their experience to strike three times to earn a well deserved victory. Pradnya Maulingkar in the 32^nd minute, Manjita Mathkar in the 47^th & 50^th minute were the scorers for the champions.

Earlier in the semi finals for men St. Xavier’s came back strongly to draw even 2-2 with Govt. College Quepem after trailing 0-2 at half time and win 4-1 in the tie breaker to enter the finals. John Gracias in the 3^rd minute and Benny Oliviera in the 17^th minute scored for Quepem. Seby Fernandes in the 40^th minute, Snyter Pereira in the 59^th minute, scored for Xavier’s.

In the second semis Chowgule defeated defending Champions Fr. Agnel College, Pilar 3-5 in the tie breaker. In regular play Chowgules took the lead through Kamal Minz in the 25th min. George scored for Fr. Agnel in the 40th min.

Rev. Fr. Wilfred Fernandes, Administrator of Don Bosco Institution, Panaji was the Chief Guest for the prize distribution ceremony. Rev. Dr. Walter D'sa, Principal of St. Xavier’s College and Rev. Fr. Ralin from Don Bosco were the Guests of Honour.
