Rosary College Navelim, lifted the Xavier’s Gold Cup with pride after defeating hosts St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa 7-5 via tiebreaker at St. Xavier’s College ground on Thursday.
Rosary’s feat is commendable considering that they were playing in their opponents den and in front of a hundreds of St. Xavier’s supporters. At the same time, St. Xavier’s too put up an impressive performance despite of playing with their second string players. Keeping an eye on the preparations for the Goa University tournament, St. Xavier’s coach Fausto Lobo preferred resting his star players to make way for his second team players to prove their worth.
Nevertheless, the match had all the elements of a perfect entertaining final. The score read 2-2 at the end of regulation time.
Rosary were the ones to grab the lead first. In the stoppage time of the first half, playmaker Clencio Pinto neatly struck the ball from a considerable distance to beat St. Xavier’s keeper Agnelo.
Changing ends, St. Xavier’s looked like a transformed side. The home team created as series of attacks at the rival citadel. Ultimately it was the brilliance of Lesten Martins that not only brought St. Xavier’s on levelled terms but also gave them a 2-1 lead. The midfielder first intelligently headed home Samson Cardoz’s long floater in the 63rd minute and later converted clinically from a 30-yard free kick in the 76th minute.
From then on St. Xavier’s seemed to be in total control. However, the youngsters gathered unnecessary pressure towards the dying stages. St. Xavier’s striker Shubham Dessai picked up a red card after a dangerous tackle on Rosary’s Razor Braganza.
With one man down and just a few seconds remaining for the final whistle, St. Xavier’s conceded a goal. Rosary defender Ronald Dias scored the precious equalizer to silence the crowd 2-2.
In the resultant tiebreaker, Rosary held their nerves to walk home victorious. Chief guest Mr. Francis D’Souza, Minister for Urban Development presented the trophies to the winning team. “In such ground conditions I feel you played the best. But there should be discipline. Red card at inter-college level is not acceptable,” Mr. D’Souza said in his address to both the finalists. Guest of honour Mr. Michael Lobo, MLA of Calangute constituency and St. Xavier’s College principal Dr. (Fr.) Walter de Sa were present among other college staff members.
Individual prizes were awarded to the following:

Best forward: Nigel Falcao (Rosary)
Best midfielder: Jason Pereira (Rosary)
Best goalkeeper: Agnelo (St. Xavier’s)

Make way for the Champions - St. Xavier's College
St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa laid their hands on the glittering Chowgule Golden Jubilee Cup after defeating Don Bosco College, Panjim 1-0 in the final played at Chowgule college ground on Monday.
The all important goal came in the dying moments of the match. St. Xavier’s striker Synter Pereira was anxiously waiting to latch onto Edberg Sequeira’s cross. However a Don Bosco defender intercepted in between to do the needful.
The Mapusa side enjoyed more ball possession but their classy moved, somehow, could not be transferred into goals.
Gopal Shirodkar and Edberg played a key role for Xavier’s in the final. Both the midfielders ensured that the side played like a well oiled unit. Similarly their defence marshalled by Shane Temudo made no errors in the task allotted to them.
This triumph makes St. Xavier’s the favourites for the Xavier’s Gold Cup which is played at their own den. It also gives the Xavierites a psychological advantage for the Goa University tournament which is expected to commence soon.
St. Xavier’s coach Fausto Lobo certainly needs a special mention. The player-friendly coach has managed to get the best out of the boys even if he had a weaker squad to work with. “I am extremely happy with their performance. Everyone is working hard and that is important. The journey is not over yet. In fact it’s just begun. Our eyes are set on the university tournament,” said the jubilant coach.

Hosts St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa scored a facile 2-0 win over Don Bosco College, Panjim to move into the quarter-final of the Xavier’s Gold Cup inter-college football tournament played at St. Xavier’s College ground on Thursday.
The winners scored a goal in each session of play. Xavier's rested most of their first team players in view of the other upcoming challenging matches. Nevertheless, the performance of the team was not affected.
In the initial stages of the match, play was mostly restricted to the midfield. In the 28th minute, St. Xavier’s took the lead through Shane Temudo who converted from the penalty spot after striker Valson Colaco was brought down by a rival defender inside the 18-yard box.
In the second half, Valson again made a dangerous run inside the rival box how the forward's attempt missed the target by a whisker.
The hosts finally struck the second goal in the stoppage time through Darel Fernandes. Lesten Martins corner was well headed by Samsung before Darel nodded home from close range.
Don Bosco did give the home team a couple of threats through man-of-the-match Soma Korgaonkar, but the hard working player lacked sufficient support from his teammates.

Xavier’s Gold Cup inter-college football tournament kicked-off on Tuesday at St. Xavier’s College ground, Mapusa. Dhempe College, Miramar defeated Government College, Quepem 7-6 via tiebreaker in the inaugural match.
The opening match of the tournament proved to be a well contested affair with either side exhibiting a beautiful brand of football. The teams were locked 1-1 at full time.
Government College had the first look at the rival goal when playmaker Micky Vas’ 40-yard free kick was kept at bay by the Dhempe goalkeeper. Nevertheless Micky’s hard work paid dividends in the 10th minute when he neatly chipped the ball into the rival nets from 25-yards.
In the first half, Dhempe never really made any convincing moves except for Myron Fernandes’ deadly runs upfront.
Crossing ends, fortunes switched as Dhempe started to enjoy more of the ball. Just four minutes into the second session the Miramar side found the equalizer. Myron made a dangerous run on the right flank before feeding Francisco on a platter. The latter fumbled yet managed to send the ball home 1-1.

Why Olympic medalist Vijay Kumar wants to quit the Indian Army?
Vijay Kumar made way into the hearts of Indian fans with his silver medal winning performance at the ongoing London Olympics. The Indian Army man finished second in the 25m rapid fire pistol event.
Arguably, Vijay ended up with a medal because of the training providing to him at the army. But today, Vijay strongly feels like quitting the army. Why? The Times of India reports:
London Olympic silver-medallist shooter Vijay Kumar on Monday said that he wants to leave Indian Army as he has not been given a single promotion in last six years despite good performances at the national and international levels.
Unheralded Vijay, who is a subedar with 16 Dogra Regiment, provided the silver lining for India in London Games last week, clinching the second place in the 25m rapid fire pistol event.
"Indian army helped me in shooting by giving me coaching facilities and providing me with pistol and ammunition but I need money for my daily needs," said Vijay.
"Since 2006 I won many national and international medals that includes 2010 Commonwealth Games' three gold and one silver medal. But I have not been recommended by my seniors. I have not given any promotion or honorary award or any other kind of facility," he added.
Six-time national champion, Vijay had won two silver at ISSF's World Cup. And though he missed out on a medal in rapid fire event at Guangzhou Asiad, he won two bronze in air pistol and center fire pistol. He also won a gold at Doha Asian Games.
"I have been continuously performing well in shooting, but I have not given any reward. I am still a subedar," complained Vijay.
Asked if he has written to his seniors about this, Vijay said, "Nothing is given in written. It is done automatically. If somebody is performing well, he is recommended by seniors."
Himachal Pradesh government has announced Rs 1 crore for Vijay but he is not satisfied with it as he is not been given any state awards so far.
"After 2010 CWG, Haryana, Punjab and other states gave promotion to their players but I have not received any award from my state where Parshuram and Himachal Gaurav award is given to those players who perform well at national and international level," he said.
The Indian Army, on its part, said it may consdider giving Vijay promotion.
The Army also said that it will felicitate the shooter with some cash award once he is back from London.
