St. Xavier’s '2' good for Don Bosco

Hosts St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa scored a facile 2-0 win over Don Bosco College, Panjim to move into the quarter-final of the Xavier’s Gold Cup inter-college football tournament played at St. Xavier’s College ground on Thursday.

The winners scored a goal in each session of play. Xavier's rested most of their first team players in view of the other upcoming challenging matches. Nevertheless, the performance of the team was not affected.

In the initial stages of the match, play was mostly restricted to the midfield. In the 28th minute, St. Xavier’s took the lead through Shane Temudo who converted from the penalty spot after striker Valson Colaco was brought down by a rival defender inside the 18-yard box.

In the second half, Valson again made a dangerous run inside the rival box how the forward's attempt missed the target by a whisker.

The hosts finally struck the second goal in the stoppage time through Darel Fernandes. Lesten Martins corner was well headed by Samsung before Darel nodded home from close range.

Don Bosco did give the home team a couple of threats through man-of-the-match Soma Korgaonkar, but the hard working player lacked sufficient support from his teammates.
