Hosts St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa set up a final clash against Rosary College, Navelim in the Xavier’s Gold Cup inter-college football tournament at St. Xavier’s College ground.
In the first semi-final played on Wednesday, St. Xavier’s defeated Dhempe College by a 2-0 margin. Both the goals came in the second session of play.
Although midfield and frontline played well, St. Xavier’s had to rely on their defenders to get the goals.
Stopper back Samsung Cardoz gave the home side the lead in the 52nd minute after scoring from close quarters. Wing back Jovito Fernandes scored the second goal for St. Xavier’s in the 65th minute from a one on one situation with the rival keeper.
In the second semis, Rosary College scored a narrow 1-0 win over Damodar College, Margao. The all important goal came in the first half when Stephen Pereira’s rasping long ranger made its way into the Damodar nets.
