Just 3 years...way to go!

Its been exactly three years that I started this blog 'Patterson's Sports Page' and undoubtedly its been the most satisfying experience to pen down my thoughts through this medium. Although I prefer restricting the content to 'sports' only, shamelessly I would like to admit that I have gone against my word. Well, its just not me to be blamed. What can one do if the platform is such a tempting one, that you just can't avoid penning your thoughts down, regardless of what your content is.

Blogs are such are such an attractive and interactive medium that I doubt anyone would refrain from stretching its utilitarian power. But I do confess that in these three years I haven't made the most out of the privilege I have. Yet, the response is simply amazing and certainly encouraging as well.

My sincere effort, through this blog, is to highlight rural and youth-oriented sports activities in Goa that fail to find space and time in main stream media.  Yes of course, along with such content, you will also find a lot of my opinions on random sports news around the globe. This is basically what has kept the blog ticking.

All this would not have been possible without you visitors - some dedicated, some frequent, some rare; but whoever you may be, I just want to say THANK YOU. Of what use is written matter if not read?

Kindly feel free to make suggestions and give feedback about the blog and its content. It will be an honor to listen to YOU.

Muito Obrigado!

The Myth behind India’s Qualification to the 1950 FIFA World Cup

Goan and Indian football fans have been anxiously waiting for the moment when India qualifies for the FIFA World Cup. Practically speaking, the goal is a distance dream that will take many years of preparations to qualify for the mega tournament. Yet it is very common to see fans ask the same question repeatedly, “When will India qualify for the World Cup?”

Indian football has been a subject of mockery for the media and rivals of the sport. And rarely there has been any appreciation for Indian football’s achievements despite its barriers like poor infrastructure, lack of youth development programmes and corruption.

Amidst all the problems, it is interesting to note that India once qualified for the World Cup in 1950. The period from 1950 to 1964 is considered as the Golden era for Indian football as the national team won laurels at international level like the Olympics and Asian Cup during that period.

India’s qualification for the 1950 World Cup was more of a fortune. At that time, the Indian team was considered as a football powerhouse in Asia. Four teams – Burma, Indonesia, Philippines and India – were invited to participate in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. All the teams, except India, withdrew from the competition. So India were automatically placed in the world cup which was held in Brazil. India were pitted against Sweden, Italy and Paraguay in Group 3.

Sadly, India also withdrew from the mega event at the eleventh hour. There is not one concrete reason to why India withdrew. However the story, that FIFA sent back the Indian team because they had no shoes, is a myth and a way of mocking Indian football. In fact sources reveal that FIFA had no objection if Indian footballers played barefoot. The choice was left to the players and the All India Football Federation (AIFF)

Then why did India back out from the tournament? The most possible reasons for India’s withdrawal are state below :-

  • India never understood the value of participating in a FIFA World Cup. The Olympics was everything for them at that time. So they did not attend the biggest sporting event of the world. The then national team captain late Sailen Manna said, “We had no idea about the World Cup then. Had we been better informed, we would have taken the initiative ourselves. For us, the Olympics was everything. There was nothing bigger.” The legendary Indian footballer was found quoted on a website.

  • Another known reason was that there were issues in the team selection. There also seemed insufficient time to practice for such a huge competition. This was the official reason stated by the All India Football Federation.

  • India could not bear the cost for travelling from India to Brazil. India had got independence just three years prior to that World Cup and hence their economy was not stable yet. It certainly took time for India to become a stable economy and generate revenue. According to some sources, FIFA agreed to bare most of the travel cost yet the team failed to participate.

  • There are high possibilities that the Indian players were reluctant to embark on a long sea voyage as during those days most of the people commuted from country to country by sea. A common Indian man, somehow, felt very hesitant to travel such a long journey that too by sea.

Many Indians as well as non-Indians are still under the impression that India did not play the WC because they were not allowed to play barefoot. This trend will continue to remain the same until sufficient efforts are made to rectify this misconception.

It is surprising that the Indian media never made any attempts to rectify the world’s stereotypical thinking about Indian football. Had the media played its role with loyalty, football could have been a legacy for Indians today and not a subject of mockery.

Rosary College crowned champions of Xavier's Gold Cup

Rosary College Navelim, lifted the Xavier’s Gold Cup with pride after defeating hosts St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa 7-5 via tiebreaker at St. Xavier’s College ground on Thursday.

Rosary’s feat is commendable considering that they were playing in their opponents den and in front of a hundreds of St. Xavier’s supporters. At the same time, St. Xavier’s too put up an impressive performance despite of playing with their second string players. Keeping an eye on the preparations for the Goa University tournament, St. Xavier’s coach Fausto Lobo preferred resting his star players to make way for his second team players to prove their worth.

Nevertheless, the match had all the elements of a perfect entertaining final. The score read 2-2 at the end of regulation time.

Rosary were the ones to grab the lead first. In the stoppage time of the first half, playmaker Clencio Pinto neatly struck the ball from a considerable distance to beat St. Xavier’s keeper Agnelo.

Changing ends, St. Xavier’s looked like a transformed side. The home team created as series of attacks at the rival citadel. Ultimately it was the brilliance of Lesten Martins that not only brought St. Xavier’s on levelled terms but also gave them a 2-1 lead. The midfielder first intelligently headed home Samson Cardoz’s long floater in the 63rd minute and later converted clinically from a 30-yard free kick in the 76th minute.

From then on St. Xavier’s seemed to be in total control. However, the youngsters gathered unnecessary pressure towards the dying stages. St. Xavier’s striker Shubham Dessai picked up a red card after a dangerous tackle on Rosary’s Razor Braganza.

With one man down and just a few seconds remaining for the final whistle, St. Xavier’s conceded a goal. Rosary defender Ronald Dias scored the precious equalizer to silence the crowd 2-2.

In the resultant tiebreaker, Rosary held their nerves to walk home victorious. Chief guest Mr. Francis D’Souza, Minister for Urban Development presented the trophies to the winning team. “In such ground conditions I feel you played the best. But there should be discipline. Red card at inter-college level is not acceptable,” Mr. D’Souza said in his address to both the finalists. Guest of honour Mr. Michael Lobo, MLA of Calangute constituency and St. Xavier’s College principal Dr. (Fr.) Walter de Sa were present among other college staff members.

Individual prizes were awarded to the following:

Best defender: Samson Cardoz (St. Xavier’s)

Best forward: Nigel Falcao (Rosary)

Best midfielder: Jason Pereira (Rosary)

Best goalkeeper: Agnelo (St. Xavier’s)

Man of the final: Razor Braganza (Rosary) and Lesten Martins (St. Xavier’s)

Hosts St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa set up a final clash against Rosary College, Navelim in the Xavier’s Gold Cup inter-college football tournament at St. Xavier’s College ground.

In the first semi-final played on Wednesday, St. Xavier’s defeated Dhempe College by a 2-0 margin. Both the goals came in the second session of play.

Although midfield and frontline played well, St. Xavier’s had to rely on their defenders to get the goals.

Stopper back Samsung Cardoz gave the home side the lead in the 52nd minute after scoring from close quarters. Wing back Jovito Fernandes scored the second goal for St. Xavier’s in the 65th minute from a one on one situation with the rival keeper.

Xavier's on the roll; Rosary impress too

After clinching the Chowgule Golden Jubilee Cup, St. Xavier's College continue to dominate as they made it to the semi-final of their own Xavier’s Gold Cup. Rosary College also joined the hosts in the semi-final line-up. The matches were played at St. Xavier's College ground on Tuesday.

In the first match of the day, St. Xavier’s defeated Fr. Agnel College, Pilar 4-2 via tiebreaker. The teams failed to break the deadlock within the regulation time.

Although St. Xavier’s played a beautiful game, their scoring options were squandered by Shubham Dessai on a couple of occasions. In the resultant tiebreaker St. Xavier’s found the nets through Mawrick Almeida, Jovito Fernandes, Lesten Martins and Shane Temudo while Reenoy and Clive were the scorers for Fr. Agnel

In the next quarter-final, Rosary College got the better of Chowgule College by a 3-0 margin. The winners led 1-0 at half time, courtesy an early strike from Bitu Singh.

Crossing over, Rosary pumped in two more goals through Stephen Pereira and Clencio Pinto.

In the semis, Rosary College will face Damodar College, Margao while St. Xavier’s will play host to Dhempe College, Miramar.

Make way for the Champions - St. Xavier's College

St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa laid their hands on the glittering Chowgule Golden Jubilee Cup after defeating Don Bosco College, Panjim 1-0 in the final played at Chowgule college ground on Monday.

The all important goal came in the dying moments of the match. St. Xavier’s striker Synter Pereira was anxiously waiting to latch onto Edberg Sequeira’s cross. However a Don Bosco defender intercepted in between to do the needful.

The Mapusa side enjoyed more ball possession but their classy moved, somehow, could not be transferred into goals.

Gopal Shirodkar and Edberg played a key role for Xavier’s in the final. Both the midfielders ensured that the side played like a well oiled unit. Similarly their defence marshalled by Shane Temudo made no errors in the task allotted to them.

This triumph makes St. Xavier’s the favourites for the Xavier’s Gold Cup which is played at their own den. It also gives the Xavierites a psychological advantage for the Goa University tournament which is expected to commence soon.

St. Xavier’s coach Fausto Lobo certainly needs a special mention. The player-friendly coach has managed to get the best out of the boys even if he had a weaker squad to work with. “I am extremely happy with their performance. Everyone is working hard and that is important. The journey is not over yet. In fact it’s just begun. Our eyes are set on the university tournament,” said the jubilant coach.

Following were individual prizes awarded:

Tiger of the tournament: Micky Vaz (Government College, Pernem)

Man of the final: Alber Gonsalves (St. Xavier’s)

Best striker: Snyter Pereira (St. Xavier’s)

Best Goalkeeper: Soma Korgaonkar (Don Bosco)

St. Xavier’s '2' good for Don Bosco

Hosts St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa scored a facile 2-0 win over Don Bosco College, Panjim to move into the quarter-final of the Xavier’s Gold Cup inter-college football tournament played at St. Xavier’s College ground on Thursday.

The winners scored a goal in each session of play. Xavier's rested most of their first team players in view of the other upcoming challenging matches. Nevertheless, the performance of the team was not affected.

In the initial stages of the match, play was mostly restricted to the midfield. In the 28th minute, St. Xavier’s took the lead through Shane Temudo who converted from the penalty spot after striker Valson Colaco was brought down by a rival defender inside the 18-yard box.

In the second half, Valson again made a dangerous run inside the rival box how the forward's attempt missed the target by a whisker.

The hosts finally struck the second goal in the stoppage time through Darel Fernandes. Lesten Martins corner was well headed by Samsung before Darel nodded home from close range.

Don Bosco did give the home team a couple of threats through man-of-the-match Soma Korgaonkar, but the hard working player lacked sufficient support from his teammates.

Xavier's Gold Cup commences; Dhempe win inaugural match

[slideshow]

Xavier’s Gold Cup inter-college football tournament kicked-off on Tuesday at St. Xavier’s College ground, Mapusa. Dhempe College, Miramar defeated Government College, Quepem 7-6 via tiebreaker in the inaugural match.

The opening match of the tournament proved to be a well contested affair with either side exhibiting a beautiful brand of football. The teams were locked 1-1 at full time.

Government College had the first look at the rival goal when playmaker Micky Vas’ 40-yard free kick was kept at bay by the Dhempe goalkeeper. Nevertheless Micky’s hard work paid dividends in the 10th minute when he neatly chipped the ball into the rival nets from 25-yards.

In the first half, Dhempe never really made any convincing moves except for Myron Fernandes’ deadly runs upfront.

Crossing ends, fortunes switched as Dhempe started to enjoy more of the ball. Just four minutes into the second session the Miramar side found the equalizer. Myron made a dangerous run on the right flank before feeding Francisco on a platter. The latter fumbled yet managed to send the ball home 1-1.

Pressure kept mounting at both ends as the match progressed towards its closure. At the end of regulation time the teams remained levelled at 1-1.

In the resultant tiebreaker Dhempe scored through Gauresh Dias, Raymond Rodrigues, Minesh Kunkolkar, Jerson Pereira, Rohit Ramdan and Dayesh while Micky, Briton Faria, Jelies Gracias, Anthony Fernandes and Allan Carvalho netted for the Quepem side.

Myron Fernandes of Dhempe was adjudged as the man of the match.

Prior to the match, the teams were introduced to the chief guest Rev. Dr. Walter De Sa, Principal of St. Xavier’s College. Fr. Walter inaugurated the tournament which is being organized as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the college. Vice principals Mr. Herwin Furtado and Mrs. Ursula Barreto also graced the occasion.

Why Olympic medalist Vijay Kumar wants to quit the Indian Army?

Vijay Kumar made way into the hearts of Indian fans with his silver medal winning performance at the ongoing London Olympics. The Indian Army man finished second in the 25m rapid fire pistol event.

Arguably, Vijay ended up with a medal because of the training providing to him at the army. But today, Vijay strongly feels like quitting the army. Why? The Times of India reports:

London Olympic silver-medallist shooter Vijay Kumar on Monday said that he wants to leave Indian Army as he has not been given a single promotion in last six years despite good performances at the national and international levels.

Unheralded Vijay, who is a subedar with 16 Dogra Regiment, provided the silver lining for India in London Games last week, clinching the second place in the 25m rapid fire pistol event.

"Indian army helped me in shooting by giving me coaching facilities and providing me with pistol and ammunition but I need money for my daily needs," said Vijay.

"Since 2006 I won many national and international medals that includes 2010 Commonwealth Games' three gold and one silver medal. But I have not been recommended by my seniors. I have not given any promotion or honorary award or any other kind of facility," he added.

Six-time national champion, Vijay had won two silver at ISSF's World Cup. And though he missed out on a medal in rapid fire event at Guangzhou Asiad, he won two bronze in air pistol and center fire pistol. He also won a gold at Doha Asian Games.

"I have been continuously performing well in shooting, but I have not given any reward. I am still a subedar," complained Vijay.

Asked if he has written to his seniors about this, Vijay said, "Nothing is given in written. It is done automatically. If somebody is performing well, he is recommended by seniors."

Himachal Pradesh government has announced Rs 1 crore for Vijay but he is not satisfied with it as he is not been given any state awards so far.

"After 2010 CWG, Haryana, Punjab and other states gave promotion to their players but I have not received any award from my state where Parshuram and Himachal Gaurav award is given to those players who perform well at national and international level," he said.

The Indian Army, on its part, said it may consdider giving Vijay promotion.

The Army also said that it will felicitate the shooter with some cash award once he is back from London.

Mahindra Quest Continues in Catalunya

After a two week break from racing and a busy spell at the engine shop, Mahindra’s riders and team join forces again this weekend at the Montmeló circuit outside Barcelona for round five of 17 in the Moto3™ World Championship.

A tranche of new engine parts and the boost of having opened their World Championship score at the previous round will add further impetus to their efforts – race-developing the all-new all-independent Mahindra MGP-30 in the white heat of grand prix competition.

It was the younger Mahindra rider, Marcel Schrötter (19, from Germany), who bagged the points, in a gruelling race in which his refusal to give up in treacherous wet conditions earned him 12th place. Team-mate Danny Webb (21, from England) fell prey to the conditions, dashing his hopes of making the most of his skills on the wet track.

The Indian team, based in Italy, is facing a grid full of over-the-counter production racers with its own pure prototype – still at the beginning of its development and already able to mix it with the establishment. Mahindra has chosen this difficult path because engineering lessons learned offer greater research-and-development opportunities to the Indian manufacturer.

“We have had some challenging times, but the result at Le Mans shows that if we never give up and all work together, we can continue making progress. That is very much the Mahindra philosophy,” said Mahindra Racing’s CEO Mufaddal Choonia.

The Catalunyan GP is the second race this year in Spain, with Moto3 the first race of Sunday, over 22 laps of the 2.937-mile (4.727 km) circuit. The track is shared with Formula One, but does not use the chicanes put in for the cars.

DANNY WEBB

This project is tough but interesting, and we are taking it step by step. I’m looking forward to testing the new parts, and having another go at getting further forward in qualifying and the race. It’s not a favourite track, but it’s a good track. Let’s go.

MARCEL SCHRÖTTER

To be honest Le Mans was one of the most difficult races I’ve ever done. I just wanted it to be over. Now looking back I can appreciate the result a bit more. We’ve been asking for more from the engine, and that’s what we’re expecting at Catalunya.

Donald, Sattappa, Dayne, Katya, Vir and Myron win championships

[slideshow]

Donald, Sattappa, Dayne, Katya, Chadwick and Myron crowned themselves with glory, by winning the 2012 National Boardsailing Championships in their category with clear leads over their rivals.

Donald Coelho of Goa Beach sports Academy, captured his second National title in the Raceboard Seniors, in no uncertain terms, taking sweet revenge on Remy, who had just piped him to the title last year. Donald kept a clean slate taking 10 guns to win his second title.

Sattappa Kuranagi of AYN Mumbai, won his second title in the RSX class Seniors, after a hard and bitter fight with his compatriot and main rival Chenaiah. It was heartbreak for Chenaiah, who is participating in his first Nationals. However he performed creditably to take the second spot.

Dayne Coelho, GYA, performed a hat trick by capturing his third title in a row in the Raceboard Youth division. At age 14 he still has 3 more years in the Youth division, and one hopes to see him excel at the international level in the youth and Senior divisions.

Katya Coelho, of GBSA, captured her first National title, beating back all the challenge, in the Raceboard Youth Girls division. Malvika Joshi put up a gritty performance to take the second place.

Chadwick won the Raceboard Junior Boys title after a hard fought battle with his main rival Vir.Menon. With both tied till the final race, Chadwick sialed his heart out in the strong wind conditions to win the final race and take the Championship.

Myron Gomes of GYA, son of ex- National Champion Mathew Gomes, showed his sailing genes, by winning the title in the Raceboard Subjunior Division.

The final day of the National Boardsailing Championships started in winds of 8 knots building up gradually to 15 knots. 2 races were sailed back to back in the morning session, and one in the afternoon.

In the RSX Seniors once again the honours were shared by Sattappa and Chennaiah. The first race saw Sattappa , Murugan, Chennaiah and Prabhu shoot off the start line together. Sattappa tacked off to the port side of the course and was soon followed by the other three. In the tacking duel Chennaiah got the better of Sattappa to round the windward mark first followed closely by Sattappa, Murugan and Prabhu. On the reach, however Sattappa sailed better to take control of the race again. After a close fight Sattappa piped Chenaiah to win the race by a couple of seconds. Murugan took the third spot.
In the second race Chenaiah shot off from the start, and raced away, to lead till the halfway mark. Sattappa fought back hard, and kept the pressure on Chennaiah, who capsized and let Sattappa shoot past him to take his second gun of the day, and assure himself of the Championship.

In the Raceboard Seniors, Remy sailed well in the first race of the day, to take the lead and hold Donald at bay. Donald fought hard but Remy held on to win the race.
However in the second race of the morning, a pumped up Donald pushed hard from the start. Donald gave Remy no chance at all, taking the lead from the start to end and winning with a lead of over 100 mtrs. A fighting Malkit Singh who had lost out to Ram Lal yesterday, kept a close watch on Ram Lal, and kept him covered all through out to make sure that he took the third spot in both the races to keep his hopes of a bronze medal alive.

In the Raceboard Youth Boys, Dayne proved his superiority in no uncertain terms by taking both the guns very comfortably. Canute Demello came back strongly to take the second and third place in the two races. Dirquane took the third and second place in the two races.

In the Raceboard Youth Girls, Malavika Joshi gave Katya a good fight, but Katya with her better board handling and superior windsurfing skill held off Malvika’s challenge, to take both the guns.Malvika took the second spot in both races and Malaika Vaz, took the third spot.

In the Raceboard Junior Boys,it was once again a fight between Chadwick and Vir. Chadwick took the gun in the first race, but Vir fought back in the second race to race ahead from the start and win the second race in the morning.session.

A lot of credit for the excellent performance of the Goan sailors should go the Mathew Gomes, the state sailing coach, and former National Windsurfing Champion, who has put in a lot of work alongwith Donald Coelho to build up the standard of the Junior and youth sailors of Goa.

The afternoon session saw strong winds of about 15 knots gusting to 22 knots, with swells of I.5 mtr..

In the RSX Seniors it was once again a fight between Chenaiah and Sattappa. Satappa raced off in the strong wind conditions, doing far better on the beats and reaches than Chenaiah, to win the race comfortably.

In the Raceboard Seniors, Donald retired from the final race, since he had already won the Championship. Remy sailed breavely in the strong winds to win the race comfortably

In the Raceboard Youth, Dayne took the lead and made a clean sweep of the race.

In the Raceboard Youth Girls a fast improving Malvika put up a stellar performance to take her second gun after Katya retired from the race with a broken mast foot.

In the Junior Boys Chadwick sailed well to win the race in the Junior boys. Vir Menon sailed bravely, but the strong wind conditions were a bit too much for him, causing him to capsize several times. His performance is extrememly creditable considering that this is his first National Championship in Windsurfing.

In the subjunior boys, it was Myron Gomes who ruled 2 guns and one second place. Malban took one gun and 2 second places, followed by Rhea.

Mr. Vasudev Prabhudesai, Director of Sports was the Chief Guest, and Cesar Menezes, was the guest of Honour.
Mr Prabhudesai praised the sailors for their excellent performance and exhorted them to reach higher standards. He assured them of all the help and assistance from the Govt, who he said would go all out to support top sports persons. The prizes were given away by by Mr .Prabhudesai.

Close fight between Donald & Remy in RACEBOARD; Sattappa, Chenaiah & Prabhu in RSX; Dayne, Katya, Vir and Myron win in youth, juniors & sub juniors

Day 2 of the 2012 National Boardsailing Championships started in light wind conditions of about 7 knots, gradually picking up to 10 knots. Two races were sailed in the morning session.

The fourth race of the Championships sailed in the morning session, saw Remy sail off to the starboard side of the course to take counter the strong high tide current. The rest of the fleet however sailed to the port side of the course. The light winds and strong currents gave Remy a great advantage as he raced past all the competition leaving Donald a good 300 mtrs behind. Donald sailed his heart out and managed to reduce the gap, but Remy managed to hold out and win the race comfortably in the Raceboad Seniors followed by Donald.

The fifth race in the Raceboard Seniors saw a strong fight back from Donald, who covered Remy from the start, after getting off to a perfect start. Donald took no chances and raced off to build a lead in each leg of the race and win the fifth race comfortably, followed by a visibly tired Remy. A much improved Malkit Singh of AYN surprised RamLal on the Navy and took the third position in both the races.

In the RSX Seniors it was once again a close fight between Sattappa, Chennaiah, Murugan and Prabhu. In the fourth race, all four sailors kept a close watch on one another. Chennaiah, who is a better sailor in light wind conditions, kept a tight control on the race and kept Sasttapa covered all through to ultimately win the race by about 3 boad lengths. Sattappa took the second spot followed by Prabhu.

In the fifth race, Sattappa turned the tables on Chennaiah. Sattappa got off to a perfrect start and stayed upwind of Chennaiah, tacking on every tack of Chennaiah. Chenaiah fought bravely and tried his best to get out of Sattappa’s cover, but Sattappa held on grittily and won the race with a lead of 2 board lengths. Prabhu sailed consistently to hold onto the third position in both races.

Dayne and Katya of Goa Beach Sport Academy made a clean sweep in the raceboard class Youth Division winning both the races comfortably. Cany Rodrigues put up a good show to surprise his rivals and take the second position in both the mornings races in the youth boys. Malvika Joshi sailed consistently to hold onto her second position in the youth girls in both the races.

The honours in the Raceboard Junior Boys were shared by Chadwick Demello of GYA and Vir, Menon of RMYC. Chadwick took the fourth race comfortably, with Vir in the second spot, but a fast improving, displayed far better board control and race tactics to surprise Chadwick and win the fifth race with a comfortable lead. Raunak Pai of GYA took the third spot. . .

The afternoon session saw the wind pick up to about 15 knots with swells of over 1 mtr.
The sixth race saw a lot of excitement with Remy trying to take off on a port tack from the pin head. Mahindra Racing felicitates rider Sarath Kumar for becoming the first Indian to score points in the Italian Championship

Mahindra Racing, the first Indian team to compete in the Italian Championship, created history when their Indian rider, Sarath Kumar, scored his first points in the competitive Championship during the second round in Imola. The team got off to a spectacular start in its maiden entry in the Italian championship this year with ex-Italian champion, Riccardo Moretti, winning the opening two rounds in the 125 GP class. Kumar finished seventh in the second round for a personal tally of nine points after a technical issue forced him into early retirement in the opening race.

“We are delighted by Sarath’s performance at Imola and are confident that he will only get better. Mahindra Racing sees the Italian championship as an opportunity to nurture and grow rising Indian talent like Sarath. Riding in a championship with such high standards is a great opportunity for him to hone his skills and develop into a world-class rider,” said Mufaddal Choonia, Chief Operating Officer, Mahindra Racing, at a special ceremony in Chennai to felicitate Sarath for his achievement.

“This is a moment of great pride for me as the Italian Championship is one of the most competitive breeding grounds for emerging talent on the racing circuit. Its all over for St. Britto's HS, Goa but...

St. Britto's faced their fourth successive defeat after losing 0-2 at the hands of CRPR, New Delhi in the Mahindra Youth Football Challenge played at the Bangalore Football Stadium, on Sunday.

Only the top two teams can make it to the finals. Mathematically, the Goan side are out of the tournament now but have one more game in hand. The Mapusa school failed to secure even a single point from the four games and are left looking at the last match against St. Aloysius HS, Bangalore which they would be playing only for pride.

Can the Goan lads save the pride of the state? To know whether they do, watch out for this space on April 23, 2012.

MAHINDRA RACING TEAM WINS THE ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP 125GP RACE AT MUGELLO

Mahindra Racing Team and Riccardo Moretti got an amazing result at the Mugello Circuit on Sunday, by taking the victory in the Season opening race at the 125GP Italian Championship. It was also a good race for the Sarath Kumar, who unfortunately was forced to an early retirement due to a technical issue. Moretti started the race from the pole thanks to the outstanding performance displayed in the two qualifying sessions, while Kumar got off from the 8th row and the 22nd spot on the grid. It was the first week-end for the young Indian rider on the Italian track and also the crash suffered during the wet 2nd qualifying session didn't help, albeit it let to no injury. Moretti got a fantastic start of the race and he both maintained and quickly extended his leadership on the opponents. Kumar, on the other hand, didn't get the best start, but he was able to settle into a good rhythm and to overtake several riders ahead of him. As the race went into its second half Moretti's advantage on the runner-up grew to an amazing ten seconds, while Kumar kept pushing hard before pulling to an early and unlucky retirement - due to a technical problem he experienced with three laps to go, after a good battle with Luca Marini - brother of Valentino Rossi. The race ended up with an overpowering victory by Moretti, who crossed the finish line with a big margin over the rest of the field, that means first place in the standings.

Muffadal Choonia – Team Mahindra Racing Principal: "We feel ecstatic winning the first race of the italian championship which is one of the toughest national motor racing championships in the world. A victory in our debut race is a shot in the arm. We are now in the right frame of mind to vie for the championship title!"

Riccardo Moretti: "We started this season in the best way possible. My start from the grid was a good one and since I was in the lead I tried to push at my best to get the best margin possible. I was able to do so and that allowed me to just manage the advantage in the second part of the race. During the course of the week-end I got to know both bike and time much better and I can say we're still not at 100% but surely there's good room for improvements. I would like to thank my team that gave me a very competitive bike and I'm looking forward to the next event, that will take place at Imola."

Sarath Kumar: "It's been a very good experience for me, despite the technical problem that didn't allow me to finish the race. I learned a lot, though. I didn't get the perfect start but my race pace was not so bad. Next time I will do better, I'm sure."

Football or Rugby?

It has been nearly two years now that I have been playing for the St. Aloysius College Football team and never in this term did I play a match as rough as today. It was a nightmare. The season hasn't been great at all. Not a single trophy this year and all hopes were on the ongoing Mangalore League.

If we were to be champions, we had to win all the matches from today. Unfortunately its over for us as today we drew 1-1 to Bengre. Initially I used the word nightmare not because we drew and our chances of winning the league are over but because we were saving our lives today more than playing football.

Our opponents Bengre, known for their notorious style of play, made all attempts to crush us with rash play. We were not even given an opportunity to hold the ball for a fraction of a second. The minute we received the ball, we had a opponents going for our legs but not the ball.

To our relief, we had the crowd backing us. This is something which we have hardly experienced. The referee flashed several yellow cards to our opponents and a few to our players but the mood just could settle down. Having the built advantage, they easily crippled us for the ball. Nevertheless, it  was a good experience.

But I'm still wondering if whether what we played today was football or rugby?

Commenting on the announcement, Mr. Harish Krishnamachar, Country Head and Senior Vice President, World Sport Group said, “In keeping with WSG’s steadfast commitment towards building and promoting sport in Asia, we are proud to have added a confident and correct batsman like Cheteshwar Pujara to our portfolio. We believe in working with a select group of players. The basis of our choice of who we can work with and help from a commercial point of view is that each of the players is focussed on his on-ground performance. He is the third cricketer we have signed on after Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir, and look forward to doing some excellent work with him over the years.”

Pujara said: “I am fortunate to be associated with an organisation that is proficiently managing the commercial interests of iconic cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir. I am glad to be in the able hands of WSG and can now focus completely on performing better and cementing my place in the national squad.”

The Saurashtra-based right-handed batsman first came to the fore during the 2006 Under-19 World Cup where he was the highest run scorer and aggregated 349 runs at an average of 116. Following some big knocks for Saurashtra, including a couple of triple hundreds, he earned the India cap for the home Test series against Australia in 2010. He made his debut in the second Test of the series on 9 October 2010 at Bangalore and currently plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Mr. Krishnamachar added: “We believe Cheteshwar has the potential to be among the top five cricketers of the next generation. Known for his solid, classic technique, he has impressed critics and cricket experts alike. He has displayed his talent in age-level cricket at an international level and his appetite for big scores displayed in domestic cricket surely makes him a player to watch out for.”
